Monthly photo challenges to break out of creative ruts and grow as a photographer

Image taken during our time living in Mexico, when we challenged ourselves to really get comfortable photographing in harsh sunny light. I really love how this image turned out— I think the shadows the sun created are one of it’s strengths.

Some of my favorite work has come from passion projects— Projects that aren’t tied to any outcome for a client, but rather a personal project built around some creative constraint and practiced over numerous photo sessions.

Sometimes that’s meant photographing in lighting situations I wouldn’t typically seek out (i.e. sunny days), other times it’s looked like planning photo sessions around specific colors to really understand working with color. There’s been a lot of different photo challenges I’ve given myself and I feel like they’ve pushed me to grow as both a photographer and a creative.

This little rainbow grid was born from one of my color-focused challenges a few years back in Chicago.

How it works…

The last week of every month, I’ll announce the following month’s photography prompt.

The monthly prompt newsletter will be broken into two pieces:

1.) The photo prompt. Everyone—paid and free subscribers— will see the prompt and be invited to join. The more the merrier!

2.) Additional resources, inspiration, photo tips, and how I’m approaching the prompt. This second half will be reserved for paid subscribers only. If you’ve been on the fence about upgrading to paid, now would be a great time.

Paid subscribers will also have the opportunity to join the chat for any questions, or to upload their monthly scans related to the prompt in the chat. I love the chat feature so much for this. Who knows… I might feature some of your work down the road ;)
